How Much of a House Do You Need to be Living the American Dream? Home Ownership vs Your Pursuit of Happiness

How much of a house do you need to be living the American Dream?

Last week, we talked about the misunderstanding that you must own your home to be living the American Dream and the stigma often associated with rentingNow, let’s look at the second misunderstanding – that owning a particular home is more essential to living the American Dream than your pursuit of happiness.

You may desire a home that would show you’re living the American Dream when in fact, the home gets in the way of you truly living that Dream. So, how does this happen?

When I was growing up, whenever my father sensed that my priorities were out of order he would say, “Suzanne, you’re putting the cart before the horse.” And this is what happens when you put the house (or the cart) before the pursuit of happiness (or the horse). Your pursuit of happiness must drive the decisions you make about your house otherwise you’ll get nowhere.

The cart is put before the horse if you expect that if you get a particular house then you’ll be happy. You may buy more house than you can afford, or purchase to impress others or think a particular house or location will make you happy only to find it won’t because you don’t have clarity on what your true happiness is.

Whether you live in America or anywhere else, I want you to pursue your true happiness and live in a home that fully serves you. To do that, first get clear about how you’ll pursue your happiness and then look at what you need in a home to support you in that pursuit. This is what the Journey to Your Soul’s Home® is all about. If you need help with this, check out our resource links.

If you feel moved, write about this below because sharing is good for your soul. Next time, we’ll talk about the American Dream and the Immigration “Crisis”.

Until next week, I wish you well on your journey.
